Blog #16: Why Do People Want To Be Famous?

Image
By: Ty’Alyah Tann They say people desire fame because they want power, status, and wealth. People often see fame as a way to feel important, loved, unique, and they want to be recognized by everyone.  Growing up, we usually equate fame to happiness. Back in the day, fame was associated with acting, singing, dancing, or even art. However, in today's society, fame has become associated with social media. We can be famous for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter.  As we fantasize about the perks of being famous, we then get hit with a reality of negatives. We realize that being noticed by everyone doesn't automatically mean that you'll be loved or accepted. People on the internet are trying to spread hate, destroy your image, or creating unnecessary frustration.  Of course, we are still going to go crazy over our favorite actors, actress, singers, bands, or artists, but now it seems that fame isn't as unattainable as it looked before.  I wanted to be famous at...

Blog #15: Space Oddity

Image
By: Antonia Sussina With a solar system as vast and mysterious as ours, it’s no wonder we have such an urge to go out there and explore it. We’ve been doing this in numerous ways over the years, but one way that’s particularly groundbreaking is the Mars rover known as Perseverance. This photo also features Percy’s companion; the helicopter named Ingenuity! Having launched on July 30th, 2020, Perseverance (also known as “Percy”) bravely journeyed through space for about 6 or 7 months, landing on Mars on February 18th, 2021 at Jezero Crater. At the time of writing this (04/25/2021), she’s been on the planet for about 64 Sols, which is about 65 days, give or take. This also means that she’s been up there for approximately 2 months! Percy’s goals for this mission are as follows: while her main job is to “seek signs of ancient life” and “collect samples of rock and regolith (broken rock and soil) for possible return to Earth,” she also has four science objectives to complete. She will look ...

Blog #14: Save Ralph The Rabbit

Image
By: Gianella Solorzano Save Ralph the Rabbit.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G393z8s8nFY A YouTube video made by The Human Society of the United States made a video that went viral called “Save Ralph the Rabbit” Which is a video about Ralph the rabbit and his daily job is being an animal tester for big makeup and hair companies. He says he loves his job and that at least the humans are safe and that it doesn’t matter that he blind in one eye and can’t hear from the other.  Throughout the video he states that he has chemical burns all over his body, and he is in constant pain, and toward the end of the video it shows him in a neck cast, and is blind on both eyes now. Here is a list of brands that still test on animals     Personally, I do not buy from brands that test on animals because I simply can’t stand the ideas of little animals being hurt and killed through this process.  My question to you… What are your thoughts on the video, and about purc...

Blog #13: An Introduction to K-Pop

Image
By:  Sara Smolock K-pop has slowly been rising in popularity over the years. Its original modern origin is attributed to the group Seo TaIji and Boys hit song “Nan Arayo” which came out in April of 1992. Although it really started to take off internationally with groups like BigBang, 2Ne1 and Girls Generation. You might have first heard about the genre through  the popularly memed song of 2012 “Gangnam Style.”  Nowadays you most likely know of K-pop through the popularity of the boy group BTS. They have crushed all the records of any past K-pop group, AND many records of popular American artists. In 2018, BTS became a part of the ONLY 12 artists to completely sell out all 60,000 seats in London’s Wembley Stadium. Joining legends such as Queen, Micheal Jackson and Beyonce.  Despite BTS’s achievements, they are horribly discriminate against by the American public with many stereotyping them as “A boy band of gay looking men” They are also directly discriminated a...

Blog #12: Asexuality - The Invisible Orientation

Image
By: Emily Smolock Since International Asexuality day was last week, I thought it would be fitting to discuss Asexuality, since it is often overlooked or plain misunderstood.  Here are the Basics -   Asexual ; Someone who does not feel sexual attraction towards anyone.  Asexuality is just like any other sexual orientation and people who identify as Asexual or Ace for short, have the same emotional needs as everyone else. It is estimated that about 1% or more of the population is Asexual. The Asexual spectrum is divided into two parts: sexual orientation and romantic orientation. Aromantic: Someone who does not experience romantic attraction (Aka physical touch) Demi-Sexual and Demi-Romantic : This orientation encompasses anyone who does not experience attraction to an individual until they form a significant emotional bond with them.  Extra - The Ace Ring: A black ring, usually worn on the right middle finger, symbolizing that the wearer is Asexual.  ...
