Blog #16: Why Do People Want To Be Famous?

By: Ty’Alyah Tann

They say people desire fame because they want power, status, and wealth. People often see fame as a way to feel important, loved, unique, and they want to be recognized by everyone.

Growing up, we usually equate fame to happiness. Back in the day, fame was associated with acting, singing, dancing, or even art. However, in today's society, fame has become associated with social media. We can be famous for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, Twitter.

As we fantasize about the perks of being famous, we then get hit with a reality of negatives. We realize that being noticed by everyone doesn't automatically mean that you'll be loved or accepted. People on the internet are trying to spread hate, destroy your image, or creating unnecessary frustration.

Of course, we are still going to go crazy over our favorite actors, actress, singers, bands, or artists, but now it seems that fame isn't as unattainable as it looked before.

I wanted to be famous at one point, but then I realized there's too much drama and sacrifice for being a celebrity. My questions for you:

Do you want to be famous? If so, why and for what?

  1. Ty'Alyah, I think you have subtly *hinted* at the right answer to your question. That is, to be famous is to accept a life of notoriety (yay!) but also deep unfounded hate, criticism, resentment, and even danger. That's what is unique about this generation. We are savvy in ways that our predecessors were not.

While we openly praise and obsess over our favorite celebrities, we also understand the complicated pitfalls of 'celebrity.' Money is the upside, but the downsides are too abundant to count. Good post!

  2. Hi Ty'Alyah, I'd like to be famous just as much as the next person does, but I don't think I'd be able to handle the hate and criticism that may come with it. Despite being as glorious as it seems, celebrities have to go through everything in the public eye. If you mess up or make a mistake, you automatically shunned away and forgotten about. Even though celebrities have it easy in terms of wealth and status, it's definitely hard to be one. If I were famous, though, I'd want to be famous for being successful in what I do and my career. Thanks for sharing!.

  3. I definitely wouldn't want to be famous nowadays! But honestly, I don't think I've *ever* wanted to be. As someone who doesn't really enjoy being in the spotlight, I think being famous would freak me out far too much. It's just not something I'd be able to handle. Like you said, there's so much drama and negative attention surrounding being a celebrity, so I don't know if it's really worth it. However, if I were to become well known for something, I'd imagine it would be for something art-related! (If it truly had to happen.)

  4. For me personally, I have a dream of being recognized in my field, rather than being super "famous" per say. I'm an Animation/Illustration major as well as a film minor. I would love to tell original stories in whatever medium I can and would love for my work to be seen by others one day. Although I would not love to be super famous (not being able to walk outside) type. I think people see achieving fame as being a super star. But you could gain fame in a small niche of specific people, instead of being a person known by everyone. Which could definitely affect your situation of (if you get in drama ect.) When I was around 14-17 years old I had a mini fanbase on YouTube, It had negative sides like (constant pressure to create thing people would like) but also had many positives like ( Work got recognized, made new friends & made a little money) To summarize my long winded answer, I think I would like to achieve a small bit of fame in my life time, but not be "super famous." - Sara Smolock

  5. Personally I believe most people want to be famous just because they don't want to worry about everyday issues like, "how I am I going to pay my bills? It really all comes down to money and again most people say they want to be famous in passing just because they don't want to worry about money. I know I say things like "When I'm famous I'll do this or when I have money I'll by my mom this" all the time. I hardly know everyone who wants to be famous just to be known. Also, I believe it's even easier to become famous nowadays. (due to social media) anyone can amass a small following if they target the right niche and dedicate themselves to work on their content. Although many people grow impatient because it takes a lot of hard work and effort with little to know pay off at the start. (For example, I didn't get a small following on YouTube until 4-ish years into uploading videos.

  6. Almost everything in life has pros and cons. There is a lot of baggage that comes with being famous such as stalkers, little to no privacy with your personal life, people watching your every move and if a mistake is made then it could severely impact your entire career or relationships with others, and more. Being recognized for your talents is something to be grateful for but in my opinion the stress and anxiety it may cause is not worth all the attention. I'd rather have some recognition than someone such as Kim Kardashian.

  7. No, I would not like to be famous. Belong well known means that we every action I do is broadcasted on talk shows, podcasts, and blogs. This also means that I would not have any privacy. I need to be a perfect person in order to not stir the media, and because I’m still growing, I know that I would make a couple mistakes. I would love to live a simple secluded life between the mountains and baby goat, which is not a flattering life to showcase to social media.

  10. Personally I do find a want for fame, but there are other times where I do not want to experience fame because I feel like you would be unable to live your life to the fullest extent. The reason for the other side, my want for fame, is that I want to feel successful, accomplished, and satisfied with myself, but as I grow older, I realize fame itself might not bring me those feelings. If I were to be famous, it would be for dancing, modeling, or my law career (being a lawyer), three of my passions.

  11. Celebrities, it appears, reap a numerous amount of advantages that ordinary people do not. This leads individuals to assume that a famous person's life is much simpler; they feel that fame fixes all issues, such as poverty, neglect, rejection, and more. Who wouldn't want millions of cash and a legion of followers willing to go to any length to obtain a selfie with them? Who doesn't want to be recognized and accepted by all? Who doesn't want to be admired and acknowledged by complete strangers? People also seek fame for the power, position, and income it brings; no one wants to be regarded like a nobody, inconsequential, or weak, which is why practically everyone else wants to be famous; this is what makes celebrity so appealing. I am 50/50 when it comes to desiring fame as I would love to be a professional model and dancer. Yet, the idea of fame and constant judgment does genuinely terrify me at times.
