Blog #18: Origin Story

By: Peter Tayo

In the realm of superheroes and supervillains, an origin story or back story is always there.

From getting bit by a spider, or getting struck by lightning, there’s always something that drives these superheroes to want to save people. Even though some of these tragic backstories seem common amongst heroes, they have established the heroes into who they are. Batman, Superman, Spider-man, all had tragic backstories, however, they ended up being a symbol of hope and rising above adversity in their respective universes.

My question:  Translating this to the real world, what would be your origin story, what drives you every day to want you to achieve your dreams? What’s the origin of your dream?

  1. This such an ambitious and daunting question, Peter! And a good one, at that. I think when we compare ourselves to superheroes and the like, it's easy to feel small and insignificant. Their origin stories are so inspiring. But for many of us, our everyday motivations, pressures, and dreams are simple. We want to be happy, healthy, and leave a legacy we can be proud of. That would be my answer.

Perhaps that's why we look up to these superheroes. It's not the superhuman strength and supernatural powers we aspire to have. It's what's 'real' about them that we admire. Their ability to overcome, persevere, and always do what is right.

Not sure I answered your question :)

  2. Oh man, to answer this question simply I'd say my drive would be to inspire people. Ever since I was little I have been drawing and creating little stories on paper and in my own mind. I've always been a creatively driven person so I guess my innate desire to create would be my origin story. As an Animation/illustration major who is minoring in film, I am glad I am able to "follow my destiny" so to speak and fulfill my mission lol.

    2. I have a similar answer to Emily, I'd love to inspire others through my artwork! Since much like her I have been creative since my youth. Every time something was going wrong in my life, I've always turned to art to cope with it. So as a super hero i would love to help and inspire other anywhere I'd go. Although if we are speaking of super powers i would honestly love to transform into different things, but I'm not sure how that would be helpful to achieve my super hero goals. Mmmm Maybe I could change my powers to be something like, being able to create anything I want with a flick of my wrist.

  3. Honestly, I'd say the thing that drives me to want to achieve my dreams would be my friends and family. My friends are such incredible, talented people, and they inspire me everyday to keep going. My family always has the most faith in me, and believes that I can do anything I set my mind to, and their unwavering trust encourages me to follow my dreams and achieve my goals. My drive to continue has always been them, and my love of art also contributes to this. :)

  4. I think what drives me is the constant reminder that one day we will not be here anymore. Nothing in life is guaranteed so to wake up every morning is something to be grateful for and not something that should be wasted. I'd like to one day look back at my younger years and be oroud of all the things I did! My fear is regretting not taking advantage of my opportunities. Keeping this in the back of my mind inspires me.

  5. What honestly drives me to chase my dreams is that life is temporary and I want to live every day like it's my last which sounds very cliche. I'd hate to one day regret not living my life the way that I want to live it. The people around me also play a huge role because I want to work hard to make them proud. I want to work hard to achieve things and most importantly make myself proud. I want to feel content with the decisions that I make in my life and most importantly be happy when I look back on them. So to answer your question, I wake up everyday reminding myself of my potential and what I can be doing to better myself.

  6. If I’ll be honest, I’d probably be the most boring superhero. I don’t have a passion or drive to do anything, so working towards a goal is a slow and no existing process. In the near future I would like to strengthen my perseverance and strive to be the best I can be.

  7. This is a very unique and interesting question! Although very personal, it is the truth. I had a very tough childhood but what got me through all the troubles and hardships was dance. It was and still is basically my therapy. Ever since a little girl, I dreamed of being a famous dancer and what motivates me is younger me, in a sense, I do everything for the little girl in me because I want to be proud of myself.

  8. This is question is super thought provoking and genuinely makes the reader ponder about their life purpose. The driving force behind all the goals that I desire to accomplish in life is simply based on my parents. They have sacrificed everything for me throughout my entire life whether it was monetarily, emotionally or physically. My parents motivate me to fulfill my aspirations so that one day I can attempt to give back to them in ways that will fill their hearts and erase their stress altogether. I can never fully give back to them for giving me life and always supporting my dreams of being a dancer and model. But, one day I will able to provide them with the similar support they have given me.
