Blog #10: Automation Frenzy

By: Kholilur Rahman

Our world is slowly transitioning towards full automation within the following decades. Robots are starting to make their footprints beyond our solar system. Companies like SpaceX and Tesla are pioneering the frontline of automation. Thanks to our favorite billionaire Elon Musk, his lifelong dream of making humanity into multi-planetary species is becoming a reality right in front of our eyes.

Landing rockets in the distant planets were unimaginable a few decades ago. Now it’s common; almost every day, we hear a rocket landing on a distant planet, bringing hopes of new life. Rockets can take off and land vertically fully autonomously. The implementation of autonomous technologies is bringing concepts from movies into reality. I was an engineering major at my high school, and when I see a new product on the market that involves some degree of automation. It makes me appreciative of the hard work the engineer is putting behind the scene. I was once in their place worked on a project along with my classmates for NASA.

We are living in a time where many dreamed of living. Bleeding-edge technologies are coming into reality right in front of our eyes. Please share an example of unique automation/ technology that you read about or looking forward to.

  1. Kholilur, great topic. For sure, the most awe-inspiring and downright bewildering form of automation that piques my interest is self-driving vehicles. The technology is basically here, and it's so amazing that just a decade ago the notion seemed impossible. I think there are so many complex moral, economic, and social questions that automation raises. We tend to think of workplace automation or robotics in factories. But nowadays, these 'bleeding-edge technologies,' as you say, are becoming commonplace in our homes and in our everyday routines. Crazy, scary stuff!

  2. Great topic! First of all I want to say I think it’s super cool you worked for NASA! I suppose I can say congratulations. But to answer your question, I would say I'm looking forward to seeing how technology advances in health care. Such as improved hearing aids and robotic prosthetics. I know those things already exist but imagine how much better they will be 100 years in the future! Despite that hope, I’m personally not super fascinated with the idea of a futuristic world with spaceships and flying cars, mmm maybe if they could be good to the environment. I’m never super up to date with the newest technology coming out. I'm a little stubborn when it comes to change to be honest, but it’s fun to think about!

  3. One new technological advancement I found interesting was the Amazon grocery store. I heard that there are no cashiers and by just placing an item in your cart it will recognize it and charge you accordingly. For some reason that one stuck out to me the most over the last few years, because just thinking that is being tested and put in place in certain areas of the US, blew my mind. I know it’s pretty simple in the grand scheme of technological advances, but this is something that could affect normal everyday people down the line. (unlike other new inventions) As a side note: The thought of humans being able to live on different planets scares me especially since we as a species are ruining our own planet through pollution. I always think of it as humanity just trying to run away from our problems. Why can’t more people work towards making technical advances that help the environment instead of ones that help us escape earth just because it seems cool?

  4. It is both strange and beneficial the things that were once just a thought in automation and technology design are now becoming reality. These rather "new" forms/ways of doing things can be seen efficiently because they do not force society to immediately conform (change), but simply give an alternative option. I read once that A.I.'s in the future, even some now, could possibly affect the jobs of humans- replacing normality. Not one of the things I look forward to, but the technology I hope for is one that is able to support the ecosystems. That sustainable technology could preserve what is still natural and real in the world. I am all for new technologies, but ones that benefit our societies and world in a good way.

  5. I find it extremely worrying but fascinating that technology is becoming really advanced. I have not heard anything new in the news but I hope that with all this technology we can be able to further research into certain diseases that seem impossible to crack. I also agree with Julia about having technology benefit our society in a good way. It should do more good than harm.

  6. One example of unique automation/ technology that I'm looking forward to is flying cars. If you don't know, flying cars are self-explanatory; they're ultimately a type of personal air vehicle that can travel by both ground and air. The ability to have flying cars around is crazy to me, but it's undoubtedly mad how much technology has developed. Having read articles on this, we might be seeing flying cars around as early as 2030. People might not even have to drive anymore, and all our transportation might be in the sky, which can undoubtedly make arriving at places easier. Flying cars should not be accessible to everyone, though, because it'll take getting used to first. Great Discussion!.

  7. It is scary to me that the technology that we once viewed as imaginary is now becoming a part of our reality. An example of a unique technology that I learned about is the creation of digital avatar influencers that strikingly resemble real human beings. These avatars contain all the human features that we are familiar with from wearing designer clothing brands to complaining about having allergies on their social media platforms. They have even been photographed with real life celebrities which is genuinely shocking to me. These influencers seem to be the future of advertisements, fashion and business in general. My question is will these 3-D models take the place of real human beings in the world of commerce.

  8. Great discussion topic! It's amazing but concerning how fast technology is advancing. The fact that we’re heading down a path of full automation is scary in a sense. It seems the idea of flying cars isn’t as far fetched as we thought it would be. As you said before, what's on TV is now becoming our reality. As generations continue to form, so will the innovations of newer and faster technologies. The positive things that will come from these ideas is the biggest upside for society. I have a feeling that we're going to be the next I, Robot. Hopefully, without all the robots trying to destroy us.

  9. Recently, I stumbled upon a video of robots serving customers at a restaurant. It was a jaw-dropping discovery as I only thought that would be possible in Disney movies like Wall-E. But it kind of makes me fear that many automotive inventions would take the place of potential employees because they cost less in the long run. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how far the world has advanced through technological developments. In the future, I would like to see medical technologies that relieve people's pain sooner and more efficiently.

  10. One example of unique automation that I've been following is the Perseverance rover that successfully landed on Mars back in February (the 18th). As silly as it sounds, this robot provides a great deal of happiness for me, just because of how awesome it is that there's something out there that is going to be exploring another planet! The rover has already given us tons of amazing photos and audio recordings of Mars, and there's even going to be a technology demonstration that will test flight on Mars for the first time, in the form of a small helicopter named Ingenuity (hopefully within the coming days). To me, this is honestly just incredible, and I'm so excited to experience the future of Perseverance!

  11. I am going to be honest, I am very interested in new technology, especially space technology. I am most interested in the space technology (I do not know the specific name) but it is going outside of our galaxy and exploring the other ones. I believe that there is more life outside of planet Earth and I am excited for us to find this out

  12. I've actually rad an article on the concept of flying cars. I'm actually excited abut that because it's our imagination turning into reality. These inventions are surely going to change the world, having advancements within the present and future's technology. It's like the things we see in these science fantasy movies are coming to life through technological advancements.
