Blog #11: Is Dance a Sport?

Image
By: Priscilla Incle Dance is a purposeful art form that requires physical, mental, and emotional dedication.  It calls for the same dedication as any sport. A sport is defined as "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess” which completely agrees with the concept of dancing. Dancers spend years upon years training to reach their “prowess” or expertise in their style of dance. Training demands an individual’s time, energy, and determination. Some athletes even take dance classes, generally ballet, due to the bodily benefits. A professional dancer is accustomed to dancing for numerous hours on end and doing so for multiple days out of the week. This type of schedule is necessary due to the fact that this sport entails for the person to maintain strength, flexibility, stamina, and stability. I have been dancing since the age of 3 and it has shaped me into the person I am today. I had dance class for 5 days a week with each practice ranging from 3-4 hours or somet...

Blog #10: Automation Frenzy

Image
By: Kholilur Rahman Our world is slowly transitioning towards full automation within the following decades. Robots are starting to make their footprints beyond our solar system. Companies like SpaceX and Tesla are pioneering the frontline of automation. Thanks to our favorite billionaire Elon Musk, his lifelong dream of making humanity into multi-planetary species is becoming a reality right in front of our eyes.   Landing rockets in the distant planets were unimaginable a few decades ago. Now it’s common; almost every day, we hear a rocket landing on a distant planet, bringing hopes of new life. Rockets can take off and land vertically fully autonomously. The implementation of autonomous technologies is bringing concepts from movies into reality. I was an engineering major at my high school, and when I see a new product on the market that involves some degree of automation. It makes me appreciative of the hard work the engineer is putting behind the scene. I was once in their...

Blog #8: Declaring a Major

Image
By: Reem Nijem Hello everyone! My name is Reem, and I am still an Undeclared major. Growing up, the one question I always dreaded answering is “what do you want to be when you grow up?”. I’ve joined countless clubs, volunteered, and broadened my horizons with varying jobs, ranging from child development to the medical field. Still, I have not found my calling. I don’t know if it is my approach that is preventing me from choosing a major or if there really isn’t anything that excites me. I don’t want to settle for a job that I end up hating after a couple of years of working, so choosing the right major is a big decision for me. I’m afraid that if this continues, I might be the first person to graduate as an Undeclared major. My question to declared majors is how did you decide what you wanted to study or your future occupation? Do you have any advice for fellow undeclared majors on how to find the right major, especially in these struggling times? To anyone who is currently undecided, ...

Blog #7: Screen Time

Image
By: Emilia Krasowska Screen time is an IOS feature that allows users and parents to limit how much time they or their children spend on certain apps or on their devices in general. There have been many studies that prove that children who are exposed to too much screen time are psychologically impacted by it.  According to a 2018 study, children who spend 2 hours in front of a screen daily experience lower test scores on language and thinking skills. Children who spend more than 7 hours in front of a screen experienced a thinning of the brain's cortex which affects critical thinking and reasoning.  Too much screen time does not only impact children but also adults. “The cravings for screen-related activities mimic those of drug addicts; long-term exposure to screens can damage the frontal lobe and other areas of the brain, which leads to reduced cognitive function.” In simple words, being on our phones, tablets, computers, or in front of our televisions, it produces dopa...

Blog #6: Path to Riches

Image
By: Michael Joseph Everyone wants to be financially stable in the far future, to make and to have enough money to ensure a happy future. Growing up my dad began teaching me the importance of money and the meaning of wealth. He gave me THREE rules to follow to ensure a wealthy future saving 10% of my income, investing my income to generate more income, and living below my income. He did mention a couple more rules but in my opinion, these are the big THREE. SAVING Saving is the first step toward generating wealth. Not many understand how to properly safe, none of my friends do that for sure. When you're saving you must save at least 10% of your income, 10% because anything lowers you might not live long enough to see it grow high enough. You will need to be consistent, this is why most people do not successfully save no matter how small your paycheck is you must take 10% or more. When you take 10%, 10 times you will have 100% more, and DO NOT TOUCH IT, let it grow.   INVESTING ...
